We are sinking! ... In the lock of Gambsheim, between Strassburg and Karlsruhe. The „sun21“ is surrounded by big Rhine ships.
Letting go of Basel - evening light on the river, copper, gold. The air is cold, the heart is warm seeing so many friends waving from the old bridge. The big farewell party  is over. The Swiss Foreign Minister who christened the boat "sun21" has left, the instrument cases of the Jazz band are closed again. The loud horn of the big boat "Christoph Merian" hunks its good-bye greetings and sends shiverings down the back.
Soon, we are having the first meal on board - in the small harbour of Weil - an oriental vegetarian meal, salads, the best brownies.  It is misty, quiet.
In the morning we want to start early - it is a long stretch to Strassburg; but it is impossible: Thick fog, it is also dark still. Visibility zero. We have to wait for the daylight. A team of the local TV station joins us. They stay with us on board, until the next lock - Kembs. The sun appears out of the mist, behind the trees that stand next to the river - a huge golden disc. Then it is swallowed again by the fog. Later, it gets lighter and lighter, warmer and warmer.
