Jan 17, 2007: Trade wind system still working

23°C / 73°F
Position:18° 38' N-34° 55' W
Wind: 37km/h

We are grateful that the trade wind system is still working, in spite of abnormal weather conditions.

The trade wind has been blowing behind us for a week now. If, as we have heard, the former harsh Alemannic winter has become warm now (temperature of 17 °C in Basel during the last weekend) and if the legendary eternal spring of California shows temperatures of minus 10° C, do we have to be grateful that the trade wind system is still working? It seems so. Thus, let's be grateful. On the other hand, these winds make our deck life less pleasant.

Due to the powerful trade wind, the sea is rough. The waves reach a height of 4 meters and it is almost impossible to sit on deck, to write or to have a nice cosy crew meal together. Meanwhile, we are sufficiently far in the South to take a direct course to Martinique (264°). Today, we had more sunshine; we could thus decrease the charging deficit and were not obliged to reduce our speed during the day, as we were during the night.

Speed: 4 knots.
Meteo: stable, partially clouded.
