Jan 12, 2007: The only inhabitants of the planet
Good weather conditions permitted to celebrate Mark's birthday leisurely on deck, with jokes and ringing bells.
After seven days on a roaring sea, the calm is back. In the morning, the sky was still cloudy; but during the rest of the day, there was plenty of sunshine. We could charge 760 Amp.-hrs. We saw the long, softly rolling swell.
Looking around us - 360° in this tranquillity - there is no other boat, no sail, no freighter, and no lighthouse. Or, as a historian on a boat of Maghellan noted in his diary of 1522:
"Parece que todo ha desapercido y ya no queda en el mundo mas que agua, y nosotros, los unicos habitantes del planeta" (It seams as if everything had disappeared and nothing on earth existed anymore, except the water and ourselves, the only inhabitants on our planet).
As we already reported, our supply of fresh fruit will soon run out. But, Beat conjured up several small bags of dried apples and apricots from Binningen (Switzerland) and Southern France. The first bag was Beat's gift for Mark's birthday. Martin offered him a CD with photos of Mark that he had taken at the sea – a small attempt of self-sufficiency on board.

would love to send you some oranges from our garden in La Jolla, California. I know how much you can miss fresh fruit! Two days ago on a whalewatching cruise (where I am a naturalist) we followed a mother gray whale with her very young baby - at a safe distance - for a long time. It was awesome.

Lieber Martin, ich verbringe ein tolles Wochenende bei Regina mit diversen high-lights: das besonderste indessen ist die Computer-Lektion, bei der ich endlich gelernt habe, wie man Euren Film überhaupt anschauen kann... Ich wünsche Dir und Deinen Schicksalsgefährten weiterhin alles Gute , gnädige Winde und Wellen und hinreichend Sonne! Ich habe auch gelernt, dass das Durchkommen per mail bis zu Euch tückisch ist, vieles kommt einfach zurück. Aber mir wei nyt chlage, trotzdem ein grosses Lob an die moderne Zeit, die das was geht, trotzdem möglich macht! Mehr dann irgendwann wieder vom Schuschuri aus, wo es zwar Schnee hat, aber fast nicht mehr genug!
